Dog Training Tip of the Month
DROP IT!!! This Valuable command can come in handy if you play retrieve games, or to get something from the dog, that could harm them, like a chicken bone or dead animal. Teach the Command Most people don't bother to teach the dog how to drop the item in the first place. They just shout "DROP IT!" and expect the dog to understand. Teach the dog what the command means first. -Keep a leash on your dog to eliminate the option of the dog running away with the item. -Use a toy the dog likes, but isn't totally in love with. If they like it too much the chance of them dropping it, is slim. -Once they have the toy in their mouth, place a tempting cookie or treat on their nose and command "DROP!". The dog typically will spit out the toy, to eat the treat. PRAISE! -Repeat until you can say "DROP!" before bringing out the cookie, and the dog will spit out the toy. Play Trade Games Most dogs don't like to give up what they have because then the fun is over. Once your dog understands what "DROP!" means play trade games with 2 toys of equal value. Such as 2 tennis balls or 2 Retrieving dummies. This can also be played with 2 chewies such as 2 pig ears or rawhide bones. Engage your dog with the first item. Command "Drop" and tease your dog with the second item. Once they have dropped the first one Praise them and continue the game. Repeat untill the dog immediatly spits out the first item in anticipation of the second game starting. Till Next Month! -Aubrey
Pet Grooming Tip of the Month
Teeth Brushing Most pets don't appreciate having their teeth brushed almost as much as owner don't like brushing their dogs teeth. Unfortunately it HAS to be done to keep your pet healthy. I recommend brushing your dogs teeth as often as you think of it. If you can do it once a day, once a week or, once a month, it's better than nothing. Tools to use I don't personally like the slip on finger brushes. Once your finger gets slimy, it slips off, and is hard to stay on your finger. I like to use a worn out, old, used human toothbrush. They are soft and the long handle keeps your fingers out of your Pets mouth. Only use tooth paste designed for pets. Human toothpaste is made to be spit out. Dogs & cats cannot spit it out and end up swallowing most of it. Pet tooth paste is usually flavored so they like it a little better. If you don't have any paste just using water is better than not brushing at all. The Pet tooth pastes, are usually enzyme based, so just getting it on the teeth is enough. You don't have to brush a ton. I like to put my pet on a table or sit them on a chair. Have someone hold their collar to restrain them. I typically don't like to do this while holding the pet on the floor. They are more apt to struggle and try to get away. If you have a large dog, put them in a corner so you can use the walls to help hold them still. I use one hand to grab ahold of, and pull up, the upper lip on once side and the other hand to do the brushing. Make sure you get way back to the back teeth. These are usually the worst. Try not to worry so much about the lower teeth, or on the inside of your pets mouth. These usually aren't as bad as the upper teeth. Switch sides and you are done! If you brush your pets teeth in the tub when you bathe them, it can work nice. The pet is already in the "zone" of holding still and accepting grooming. Also if you get paste all over the place you can wash it off! And one more quick tip....encourage your dog to chew. If your dog doesn't like most chews try bully sticks or baked ears or other meaty or smoked chews. Even though they are smelly and stink the dogs LOVE them and it will do all the brushing for you. Same with Cats, get them toys to chew on and keep them teeth sparkling. This Months tip provided by Aubrey
